As infinity pools go, this particular one takes the concept right to the edge. 55 floors above the streets of Singapore, the pool at the city's newest resort - the £4billion Marina Bay Sands - is open for business.

Infinity pools are designed to make it seem as though the water extends to the horizon. In reality, the edge of the pool is usually about an inch below the water level. The water therefore spills over the edge into a catchment below, and is then pumped back into the pool.

The concept is said to have been inspired by the terraced rice paddies in Bali, Indonesia.

They are often seen in luxury resorts such as the Marina Bay Sands.

'In Singapore, Marina Bay Sands will be the pivot point in which tourism here is going to explode,' gaming tycoon Sheldon Adelson, chairman of Las Vegas Sands Corp, the parent company of the resort, said at its opening celebration yesterday.

The enormous hotel, which dominates the Singapore skyline, has 2,560 rooms and suites, a fleet of celebrity chef restaurants, shopping areas, theatres, a museum, a casino and a crystal pavilion.

The resort is set to employ 10,000 people directly and generate up to £48million each year. Entrance to the casino alone is nearly £50 a day - but an average of 25,000 people have visited the casino daily since its initial phased opening two months ago.

Thomas Arasi, president and chief executive officer of the resort, said he expects to attract an astonishing 70,000 visitors a day, 18 million a year.

The resort was designed by Moshe Safdie, who said he based it on a deck of cards.

The entrance to the casino, which costs nearly £50 to get in and is attracting 25,000 visitors each day.

It was due to open in 2009, but was delayed thanks to labour and material shortages, and funding problems due to the global financial crisis.

During the inagural, singing legend Diana Ross performed for 2,500 VIPs in the resort's Grand Ballroom. Singer Kelly Rowland also headlined an outdoor concert there.

The opening celebrations also featured a death-defying relay. Seven teams of three participants each scaled the three towers in succession before sprinting across the 340-metre long Sands SkyPark, where the infinity pool is located, to the finish line.

On the final leg of a six-week United States of America road trip, I was driving east across Interstate 40 when a spot storm with golf ball-sized hail struck. A sign near Groom, Texas, announcing the "largest cross in the western hemisphere" explained the large crucifix I’d been wondering about for miles on the highway; it seemed like an OK place to wait out the storm. On my second day visiting the astounding Iguazu falls on the Brazilian side I was forced to change to my telephoto lens as my wide angle had been damaged by the water vapour. While visiting Kruger National Park with my son, we came across two male hippos battling for dominance as we crossed a bridge over the Sabie River. The bellowing from the animals as they fought their bloody battle was incredible. They first fought in the shallows near the bank and then moved into the deeper part of the river. Kimberley big hole - South Africa

Apparently the largest ever hand-dug excavation in the world, this 1097 metre deep mine yielded over 3 tonnes of diamonds before being closed in 1914. The amount of earth removed by workers is estimated to total 22.5 million tonnes.

This is the glory hole belonging to Monticello dam in California and it is the largest in the world, its size enabling it to consume 14 400 cubic feet of water every second.

Bingham canyon mine, Utah

This is supposedly the largest man-made excavation on earth. extraction began in 1863 and still continues today, the pit increasing in size constantly. in its current state the hole is 3/4 mile deep and 2.5 miles wide.

At surface level the near perfectly circular hole is 1/4 mile wide, the depth in the middle reaching 145 metres. obviously the hole is a huge hit with divers.

Great blue hole, belize

Situated 60 miles off the mainland of belize is this incredible geographical phenomenon known as a blue hole. there are numerous blue holes around the world but none as stunning as this one.

The hole can be seen at the top left of the photo above. if you were to jump in for some reason your slightly damp body would shoot out near the bottom of the dam .
